Pit Bull Grooming

Pitbull Grooming

A timely task that is essential for the optimal health and happiness of your dog.

Although many owners try, they are unable to achieve the shiny coat that they so badly desire due to lacking the knowledge of how to acquire it.

Below we have presented some tips on how to attain a shiny coat, including the importance of diet, daily brushing, quality shampoo, and diagnosis of skin conditions.

Pitbull Grooming Tip 1: Start with Good Nutrition

Nutrition is the most vital starting point for a good, shiny coat and is perhaps the most overlooked.

The importance only multiplies as the dog ages.

Make sure your Pitbull’s diet is rich in nutrients, protein and essential fatty acids (particularly vitamin E, omega-6 and omega-3).

These nutrients allow for nourished skin and therefore a healthy coat.

Most store-bought dog foods are packed with these nutrients conveniently; however, you can also serve cooked eggs to your beloved companion to up their protein intake. This will also help their coat flourish.

Pitbull Grooming Tip 2: Brush Daily

Pitbulls have short-haired coats, so it may not seem essential to brush them frequently.  This is a common mistake made by Pitbull owners.

If you wish for your pet to have a shiny, gleaming coat, brush them daily with a rubber curry brush.

A circular motion will allow for the natural oils to be evenly distributed through the coat.

Brushing also allows for dead skin and cells to be removed from the skin; these can dull the coat by blocking natural oil production.

Pitbull Grooming Tip 3: Shampoo and Conditioner

You can get away with bathing a pitbull less frequently thanks to their short-haired coat.

When bathing is required, make sure you use a shampoo that is free of chemicals and pesticides and ensure to rinse it out well.

It is equally important to only use shampoos that are specially formulated for dogs.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommends against using shampoos formulated for humans as the fragrances and ingredients may irritate your pet’s skin and coat.

Other additives to avoid include alcohol, coal tar or sulfur-based products. Be sure to use a conditioner after shampooing to give the coat an extra shine.

Pitbull Grooming Tip 4: Dermatologic or Systemic Issues

Common dermatologic issues include sores, scabs, and hot spots.  These can stem from allergies to food, fleas or environmental irritants.

These conditions cause the dog to scratch and bite their own fur in an attempt to relieve the itching stemming from these issues.  A systemic illness such as Cushing’s disease causes the same issues.

It is essential to diagnose and treat this illness to alleviate skin conditions.

Your vet would be the best source to consult if you believe your pet has one of these illnesses.
